Chapter Thirty-Four

Walking the eight blocks to the Paragon in the middle of the day was always an experience. The shops were open, the storefronts spilling out onto the sidewalk. Record shops, cafes, everything you’d need. Most of the time, I walked right on passed, but today, I paused long enough to grab a coffee and a kolache. Normally, I wouldn’t waste eight dollars on it, but today felt like a good day.

While I waited for my coffee, a small fuzzy dog came from underneath the table, nudging at me.

“Awww, hey, little guy.” I reached down and scratched him behind the ears. He was dirty, but his tongue lolled out happily as I petted him, and that was all I saw. A dog wanting some love, and I had plenty to give. I broke off a piece of my kolache and passed it to him. He took it gently form my hands, as if he knew not to snap. Somewhere, someone taught this little guy how to be polite.

“Don’t feed the fleabag,” the coffee shop owner scowled. “I can’t get the damned thing to leave as it is.”

“I think he’s cute,” I argued, scowling at the man. “Have a heart. The poor thing is just hungry.”

I petted the dog once he finished his small meal, the guys all surrounding me, and I watched, entranced, as the dog glanced at them. “He can see y’all,” I whispered.

“Animals normally can. Cats see us the most, but dogs do, too,” Amos answered, smiling down at the dog. He reached down, as if to touch him, and when his hand didn’t pass through, he scratched him along his back.

“Do you need a home, little guy?” I asked him. With my long hours, I didn’t think I could leave a dog alone in my apartment, but maybe I could find him a home otherwise. His tongue lolled out as if to say he was fine, and I believed him. “You’re such a good boy,” I cooed at him. “I wish I knew your name.” But then I glanced at my phone and sighed. “I have to go to work, pupper. When I come back through, if you’re still here, I’ll give you a warm place to sleep tonight.”

He bumped his head against my hand, letting me rub his ear again, before he yapped and moved from beneath the table, heading off in whatever direction he was heading to before he stopped to say hello.

I tossed my trash into the trashcan and sighed, looking at Carson where he stood closest to me. “Ready?”

He nodded, and I moved around the table to continue up the street, but I didn’t make it three steps.

Behind me, the sound of squealing tires sounded so loud, it made me flinch at the suddenness of it. And the I heard the thump. I whirled with wide eyes, everything in my mind revolting against that sound.

“Where’s the dog?” I asked frantically when I saw the car stopped along the sidewalk, a man stumbling out and staring at the front of his car in horror.
